Official Roster Of Teams Announced In The $10M Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE

34 Registered Teams Representing Nine Countries to Compete in Global Competition to Develop Consumer-Focused Diagnostic Device

XPRIZE recently announced the 34 registered teams competing for the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, a 3.5-year global competition sponsored by the Qualcomm Foundation that will award $10M to teams that develop a consumer-friendly, mobile device capable of diagnosing and interpreting a set of 15 conditions and capturing vital health metrics. The group of teams exemplifies the diversity of expertise and interest in the new era of point-of-care, diagnostic technologies, with teams ranging from non-profits and academia to corporations and limited liability companies (LLCs).

Competing teams in the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE are expected to develop a device that can accurately diagnose a set of diseases, including diabetes, atrial fibrillation (AFib), stroke, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and hepatitis A, among others. The device is also expected capture real-time health metrics including blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature, independently of a health care worker or facility, and in a way that provides a compelling consumer experience.

“We are excited about the caliber of teams registered in the competition,” said Eileen Bartholomew, senior vice president, XPRIZE. “The diversity among the participants illustrates the wide range of possibilities in delivering breakthrough solutions to empower consumer health management. These teams will play an integral role in driving this new era of personalized health care.”

Teams will enter the qualifying round in May 2014 in which they will present their submissions to the judging panel – comprised of a panel of industry experts and thought leaders – for review. Following the judging process, up to 10 teams will advance to the final round in August 2014, where their entries will be evaluated on health assessment and consumer experience by both the judging panel and a consumer testing panel. Throughout the competition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will offer regulatory input to teams, also helping them prepare for potential FDA review post-competition.

“These teams and their technologies represent a significant transformation in health care through the convergence of wireless technologies and health,” said Don Jones, vice president, global strategy and market development, Qualcomm Life. “This competition is a fundamental step in driving the next generation of digital health solutions to create better access to health care and improve the inefficiencies in our system.”
