Bayer Diagnostics Joins Healthcare Exchange

Bayer Diagnostics has said it will join the global healthcare exchange that is being formed by five of the largest healthcare companies to streamline the hospital-supply business.

This announcement marks the first foray into an e-business enterprise for Bayer Diagnostics and follows the recent formation of an e-business group within the organization created to focus on the growing importance of information technology within the healthcare system.

"The healthcare system is under significant pressure to create efficiencies and reduce costs, and Bayer is committed to evaluating every opportunity to enhance our ability to meet customer needs," said Rolf Classon, president of Bayer Diagnostics. "This venture provides a unique opportunity for us to explore the potential of the Internet to allow us to deliver innovative services to our customers aimed at reducing costs and increasing productivity."

A recent study estimates that it costs $23 billion a year to distribute medical products. An estimated $11 billion in cost savings can be achieved by streamlining of operations and efficient sharing of information through advanced technology, better inventory management, and logistics.

The Global Health Care Exchange LLC was formed by Johnson & Johnson, GE Medical Systems, Baxter International, Abbott Laboratories, and Medtronic Inc. It is an independent on-line enterprise that will facilitate the exchange of information between suppliers and customers related to buying, selling, and distributing medical equipment devices and healthcare products and services worldwide.

Bayer Diagnostics, based in Tarrytown, NY, is one of the largest diagnostic businesses in the world.
